Dans son pays, la Grande Bretagne, Grayson Perry, apparaît comme une pop star ! Né en 1960 à Chelmsford, il apprend l’art, et tout particulièrement la céramique, devenu son médium principal, à l’université de Portsmouth. Que ce soit sur un vase, une tapisserie ou une sculpture en bronze, il aime créer un mélange savant et fascinant, avec des manuscrits, des pochoirs, des transferts photographiques ou des émaux. Couronné du célèbre Prix Turner en 2003, Grayson Perry, aborde aussi bien des sujets politiques et des questions universelles comme l’identité, celle de l’artiste par rapport à l’artisan, le genre, la classe sociale, la religion ou la sexualité. Et quand il communique ses opinions et ses réflexions ironiques voire carrément grinçantes sur les abus sexuels, le sadomasochisme ou la mort, il se métamorphose en son alter-ego travesti, Claire, vêtue de robes fantaisistes et colorées, aussi protéiforme dans son habillement que l’est Grayson dans son travail artistique. Ainsi, l’ancien colocataire du chanteur Boy George, également reconnu dans le monde entier, ne cesse de questionner l’être et le paraître, dynamite le bon goût, le masculin, le féminin… Avec un talent fou !
